Happy Thanksgiving from ISM Spa Management

At ISM Spa Management, we are grateful for each and every one of our wonderful clients. This year, our team of talented spa consultants has helped clients from the Graton Hotel & Casino in Rohnert Park, California on the west coast to Casa Monica Resort & Spa in historic St. Augustine, Florida on the east coast.

We have also brought our unique approach to programming to spas beyond the country’s borders, including properties in Mexico and the Caribbean. At the international properties that are sharing our innovative hotel spa management philosophy with their guests, not everyone will be celebrating Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t mean they can’t partake in the benefits of gratitude.

Giving Thanks

As a boutique spa management company known for designing innovative wellness experiences that are redefining the spa industry, our approach to programming expands upon the traditional definition of spa. Our talented spa design consultants and experienced spa architects are able to design a holistic spa environment that enhances the wellness experience, often times in ways that are not obvious to the naked eye.

In our quest to develop dynamic programming that will distinguish the properties under the care of our spa management company and will provide meaningful experiences to their guests, we have developed an expertise in many aspects of human behavior and social science that go beyond what most would expect to find in spa consultants.

In addition to developing a thorough understanding of the effect that colors, lighting, sounds and scents may have on spa guests, we have learned about the many facets of wellness and personal wellbeing.

As a result of our efforts to provide unparalleled hotel spa management and day spa management services, we have become aware of the profound benefits associated with gratitude. Research has shown that a simple gratitude practice, as reported on the science-based positive psychology platform PositivePsychology.com, can, among many other things:

  • Make us happier
  • Increase psychological well-being
  • Enhance our positive emotions
  • Increase our self-esteem

And so, as everyone at our boutique spa management company prepares to celebrate Thanksgiving, we would like to thank all of our clients for their business and for the opportunity they provide us throughout the year to experience the benefits of gratitude.

Branding is essential in modern spa management

Branding is essential in modern spa management

Branding can be an incredibly powerful tool – when done right.

At ISM Spa, a boutique spa management company based in Asheville, TN, we understand that effective branding can provide a competitive edge. Our expertise in both brand promotion and brand development has enabled our clients to enjoy that edge.

History of Branding

The background information available on the development branding reveals interesting aspects of successful branding.

According to a scholarly paper by Karl Moore, at the time an Associate Professor at McGill University, and Susan Reid, an Assistant Professor at the Williams School of Business and Economics, “Brands are as old as civilization.” Indeed, they found evidence of branding, in various forms, dating back to 2250 BCE in the Indus Valley.

For centuries, branding was used to keep track of the ownership of livestock, a practice that carries on to this day. The modern concept of branding, on the other hand, can only be traced back to the 1970s.

In How Brands Were Born: A Brief History of Modern Marketing, which appeared in The Atlantic, Marc De Swaan Arons noted that, “The shift from simple products to brands has not been sudden or inevitable. You could argue that it grew out of the standardization of quality products for consumers in the middle of the 20th century, which required companies to find a new way to differentiate themselves from their competitors.”

From there, he says, “’Winning’ was determined by understanding the consumer better than your competitors and the[n] getting the total “brand mix” right. The brand mix is more than the logo, or the price of a product. It’s also the packaging, the promotions, and the advertising, all of which is guided by precisely worded positioning statements.”

In the 21st century, “The market looks very different to just 20 years ago,” Arons wrote. “The average western consumer is exposed to some 3,000 brand messages a day.”

Cutting through the Clutter

Our spa consultants work closely with you to develop a concept that will infuse your brand with value. We look at market research to gain insight that will allow us to strengthen your spa’s position. We craft an authentic brand concept based on your spa’s culture that will pave the way for success. We can then weave your spa brand into every aspect of the guest experience – from product and service creation to subliminal design enhancements.

The bottom line: ISM Spa Management Company cultivates successful spa branding. For more information about Concept Development and Branding – or any of our other professional day spa management services – please contact us.

Our spa management company is keeping an eye on 2019 wellness trends

Our spa management company is keeping an eye on 2019 wellness trends

As leaders in the field of spa consulting, the team here at ISM Spa makes a point of keeping up with the latest trends – not only in spa management but also in wellness and other related areas.

If you’re interested in spa management – whether day spa management or hotel spa management – you should, of course, already be aware of the ever-increasing importance of wellness. The majority of clients are as interested in strategies for wellness in their day-to-day lives as they are in wellness treatments at the spa.

At ISM Spa, our unique understanding of the spa industry and its clientele has allowed us to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to developments in wellness – both inside and outside of the spa.

A little earlier this year, we saw a report from a Forbes contributor on Wellness Trends You Have To Try In 2019, which was geared to consumers..

Our top picks from their list include:

  • Unplugging. Dr. Alka Gupta, co-director of the Integrative Health and Wellbeing program at NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, told the reporter, “We are seeing a variety of apps and tools that help us monitor our use of social media. Sometimes consuming social media is important and can be helpful, but we often access this information mindlessly. I think we will continue to become more aware of the way we consume content, allowing us to unplug and avoid digital distractions that are not helpful.”
  • Finding big meaning in small rituals. “This year, we’ll all be shifting into a practice of curating moments that make us pause, appreciate and realize we deserve beautiful moments whenever and wherever we can get them,” Ashli Stockton, founder and chief executive of Sunday Forever, said.
  • Getting back to simple. “People are longing for permission to simplify, unplug and connect in meaningful ways,”  Dr. Lisa B. Nelson, director of medical education at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, says.

ISM Spa, a boutique spa management company based in Asheville, has designed advanced wellness experiences that are redefining the spa industry. If you want to be ahead of the next trend, one of our spa consultants would be happy to speak with you.

Employee engagement is essential to successful spa management

February 2, 2019 | no comments | ISM News | by: Christina Stratton

Employee engagement is essential to successful spa management

At ISM Spa, we believe that employee engagement is an essential component of our mission. Whether we are developing a plan for day spa management or hotel spa management, our spa consultants understand that employees who love coming to work and who care about the people who walk through their doors are one of a spa’s most valuable assets.

From a spa management perspective, engaged employees are particularly important. Unfortunately, engaged employees are the exception rather than the rule. According to Gallup, only 13 percent of employees worldwide are engaged at work. The latest State of the American Workplace report from Gallup says that just 33% of employed residents in the United States are engaged at work.

How to spot an engaged employee

“Engaged workers stand apart from their not-engaged and actively disengaged counterparts because of the discretionary effort they consistently bring to their roles,” Gallup’s experts explain. “These employees willingly go the extra mile, work with passion, and feel a profound connection to their company. They are the people who will drive innovation and move your business forward.”

What Gallup refers to as actively disengaged employees, on the other hand, are poison. “Not only are they unhappy at work, but they are intent on acting out their unhappiness.”

Engaged employees can be counted on to:

  • Look for solutions to problems
  • Generate new ideas
  • Help build your customer base

Gallup identified another category of worker – not-engaged employees – and says they are “perhaps the greatest untapped opportunity for businesses to improve their performance and profitability.”  We couldn’t agree more. Having the right people in place is a key building block for success – in any venture.

Margaret Jacoby, a contributor to the Huffington Post, wrote a piece on the Traits of An Engaged Employee.  “Employee engagement is the magic ingredient and the special sauce that makes all the difference in business,” she says.

If you would like to talk to one of our spa consultants about the role employee engagement plays in either day spa management or hotel spa management, please call 828-544-8377.

Spa Industry Sees Increases – Our spa consultants can help you take advantage of industry growth

April 30, 2018 | no comments | ISM News | by: Christina Stratton

For the first time in the history of the International SPA Association’s (ISPA) U.S. Spa Industry Study, the total number of visits to spas rose above 180 million. ISPA’s annual findings of spa industry financial indicators reported that the number of spa visits is estimated to have increased to 184 million in 2016, up from 179 million in 2015 (2.5 percent increase). According to an ISPA news release, the industry also continues to experience steady growth in overall revenue, locations and revenue per visit. Additionally, as the industry grows, so do the number of available employment opportunities.

The ISPA Foundation commissioned PwC to conduct the study, which presents what is known as the “Big Five”: total revenue, spa visits, spa locations, revenue per visit and number of employees for the United States spa industry.

“We are thrilled to see our industry’s hard work and dedication truly pay off with more and more consumers enjoying spas,” said ISPA President Lynne McNees. “An increase in visits means higher demand of spa services, which demonstrates a very positive outlook. As jobs are created to meet this demand, we will continue to promote the benefits of a career in the spa industry.”

The rise in visits drove the total revenue to surpass its previously record-setting mark in 2016, increasing from $16.3 billion in 2015 to $16.8 billion (3.1 percent increase). Additionally, there was growth in the total number of locations throughout the country, increasing from 21,020 in 2015 to 21,260 in 2016 (1.1 percent increase).

“The ISPA U.S. Spa Industry Study reflects a pleasing picture of steady growth in the industry. The key metrics are all continuing their upward trend and the numbers in employment highlight the importance of the spa industry to the US economy,” said Colin McIlheney, Global Research Director for PwC.

With a modest increase in the overall number of employees at 1.6% (365,200 in May 2017 up from 359,300 in 2016), there are currently 32,930 vacant positions for service providers in the spa industry.

If some of those vacancies are hampering the success of your property, contact ISM SPA management company.  ISM SPA has made operating profitable spas that deliver five-star service a specialty. ISM’s acclaimed spa consultants understand that the success of a spa is based on the quality of the people operating the facility and interacting with spa guests. The company’s approach to day spa management includes a strong focus on talent management and acquisition. In fact, ISM SPA puts such an emphasis on people, they developed nationally-certified training courses to provide continuing education for spa employees. They also offer an extensive job coaching program that identifies promising employees and then offers the professional training needed to develop their potential.

Experts in the spa management industry point out that spa jobs can offer many benefits, such as schedule flexibility, opportunities to work in a variety of international environments, exceptional training, and career growth. Working in a spa offers many perks that freelance work does not, including a steady supply of new clientele, working in a health-minded environment, and opportunities for continuing education, as well as administration benefits like advertising, accounting, and booking. With a decrease in contract work between 2016 and 2017, the spa industry presents many opportunities for employment in a business that offers job security and career growth as it continues to flourish.

“According to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are still seven million people unemployed throughout the country. Promotion of careers in the spa industry will be an important initiative for ISPA moving forward,” McNees said.

ISM SPA consulting says the findings are in line with what they have seen in the field. If you would like to position your property to take advantage of the upward trends in the industry, ISM SPA consultants can show you how.  As leaders in hotel spa management and day spa management, they have the expertise needed to track and understand shifts in the industry – often long before others.  And it is their clients who benefit!

Igniting the Future – It’s a good time for inspired spa management

April 25, 2018 | no comments | ISM News | by: Christina Stratton

The annual International Spa Association’s Conference & Expo provides opportunities for spa professional to learn from and network with respected business professionals and spa industry leaders. This year’s event will be held September 24 through 26 in Phoenix, Arizona. “This isn’t your typical spa event,” organizers say. “It’s an inspiring experience developed for today’s spa professionals by spa professionals.”

One of the highlights of last year’s event was an appearance by acclaimed poet Richard Blanco, who wrote “Ignite the Self Who Loves You Most” specifically for the occasion. Blanco is one of the most beloved and influential poets and storytellers writing today. You may remember when President Barack Obama tapped him to serve as his presidential inaugural poet (only the fifth poet so honored). In addition to his poetry, Blanco keeps busy today as a public speaker, teacher and memoirist. And, as his website says, “He continues to travel the world, inviting audiences to reconnect to the heart of the human experience and all of its beautiful diversity.”

It may be time to start thinking about this year’s conference, but it’s always a good time to take a few minutes to revisit Blanco’s poem.  You can read the poem below or click over to YouTube to hear him speak at last year’s conference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1oF5davKWU

In the poem, Blanco talks about the self “you ignore too often, but who’s always there in the murmur of your every breath, even when you’re not listening.” Here at ISM SPA consulting, we’d like to think that our spa management company was born because we were listening.

Our company culture celebrates service, welcomes innovation, rewards smart solutions, fosters wellness and reflects the passion that inspired founding partners ILANA CRAIG ALBERICO and CHRISTINA STRATTON. ISM SPA specializes in day spa management and hotel spa management as well as providing a range of spa management services. The spa management company’s approach is grounded in creating positive lasting relationships with clients by building branded spas that offer unsurpassed service, impressive results, attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Ignite the Self Who Loves You Most

By Richard Blanco

Like far too many mornings, you probably woke up today with a stranger who is you, the self you haven’t loved enough, but who’s always loved you, more than enough. The one you ignore too often, but who’s always there in the murmur of your every breath, even when you’re not listening. The invisible arms of the one who holds your soul, no matter how much you resist that embrace. The self who remembers the dreams you’ve given up to the darkness, who’d redeem them for you in full-color, if you’d trust yourself. The one who draws in dawn’s light so you can soothe the worry in your bones and burdened blood you keep living with, though you have a choice.

The self who calls you to rise like a songbird— sing your truth, though too often you remain mute with fear. The face of the one you hide behind your own face, not daring to stare into the mirror, see straight into the self who does dare to believe in you, wanting you to erase all doubt in your eyes as you brush your hair for the day. The self who invites you to sit for coffee at your kitchen table, and chat like a best friend who knows just what to say to you. The one you don’t talk to enough, whose hand you don’t hold enough, or cry with enough— to let you step at ease into the raging world.

The self on your way to work who tempts you to turn the radio off, tune your noisy thoughts into a melody. But also longs for you to sing out loud to a favorite song like a prayer. The one who sees poetry in the clouds like a symphony in the distance, sees the pines like giant angels pointing toward heaven—who sees your life like the road before you—one mile at a time.

The self who makes you stop for strangers to let them cross the street, reminding you of your path. The one you don’t thank enough for teaching you how to give, as rain gives to a river, as mountains give way to dust, as waves give to the shore. The one you forget to give to as much as you give to others. The self you need as much as a bird needs a branch to rest, and a cloud needs wind to carry it, and the moon needs the sun’s touch to let its face shine.

Enough. Tonight, come home with the self who’s always lived within you. Greet yourself at your door, let yourself in. Pour wine. Break bread. Write in your journal. Forgive yourself, as you have forgiven others. Dance again with the one who’s always been your perfect partner. Pour through old photos and remember the self who’s known all your joys and sorrows since you were a child. The one who can heal all you must heal, who praises all you must praise. Then, carry yourself off to bed in the arms of the one who’s your most loving self. Listen to that pure voice who’s always been your guide, your counsel, your lullaby. Fall asleep as one with the one who’s always burned within you as bright and true as the starlight in your eyes.

Success Starts Behind the Scenes – Raising the curtain on the pre-opening aspects of spa management

April 15, 2018 | no comments | ISM News | by: Christina Stratton

On opening night at the theater, you can sense the excitement. Sure, the audience is buzzing with anticipation, but the scene backstage is even more highly charged.  Each actor is dealing the opening night jitters in his or her own way.  Some pace, lips moving as they softly run through their lines again – and again.  Others seek a quiet corner – or create one with the use of headphones – and concentrate on breathing deeply and evenly. The stage hands are checking to make sure every prop is in its proper place as sound and lighting technicians work through checklists and final preparations.

The energy is hard to describe – the pressure is intense as dreams are on the verge of coming true. But the minute the lights come up on stage, it all comes together and the audience will be swept up in the story.  That’s the magic of theater.

There’s no magic involved in successful day spa management. And there are no dress rehearsals.  But, just like the world of the theater, the hard work begins long before the first customer walks through the spa door.

As one of the nation’s leading spa management companies, ISM SPA has the expertise and the vision needed to ‘direct’ the critical pre-opening process, from drafting job descriptions and hiring to writing policies and developing reporting procedures.

Without a script to follow, the actors on a stage would walk into each other and onto each other’s lines.  And, when it comes to hotel spa management, a good plan will function like a script – directing the timing of each component of the process and ensuring all the pieces come together seamlessly.

Drawing on their years of experience, ISM SPA consultants have developed a ‘script’ that provides the structure needed to ensure the pre-opening process runs smoothly.  With our Strategic Timeline in place, your opening will be sure to get rave reviews.

Our experience with writing job descriptions and delineating duties ensures that there is no confusion about roles when the spa opens.  We’ll work with you to develop a staffing plan that makes sense and then we will recruit, hire and train an outstanding staff.  And we can write the policies, procedures and protocols that your staff members will need to follow in order to successfully bring your vision to life.

Our mission is to provide operational excellence and optimal experiences. That applies to every aspect of spa management – from the day-to-day operations of some of the country’s top spas to the lesser-known elements of the pre-opening process.

Before a director is given the opportunity to bring a script to life on the stage, he or she will most likely have spent years working in and around the theater. Some develop experience and insight as actors, others will earn their strips by working as assistants to more knowledgeable theater professionals.

There aren’t a lot of ways to gain the knowledge and expertise needed to successfully manage the opening of a spa. That means, you won’t find many people with the skills needed to guide your project to the fabulous conclusion you are dreaming of.

Fortunately, ISM SPA management company has the depth of experience needed to transform your project from a great idea to a beautifully run and truly successful spa. Our knowledge encompasses all areas of the pre-opening process – and all facets of day spa management! Whether you need help training new employees, establishing standard operating procedures for sanitation or developing a marketing and advertising campaign to launch your new enterprise, we can help.

And, once your spa is open for business, ISM SPA can provide a full array spa consulting services to ensure your ongoing success.

The Times – They Are a Changin’ – Key trends in spa management for 2018

April 10, 2018 | no comments | ISM News | by: Christina Stratton

“A visit to some of today’s leading resort, destination and day spas demonstrates that the cookie-cutter, marble-laden pleasure palaces of the past are all but obsolete, as varying themes connected to mind-body health, cultural and environmental consciousness, and a more socially oriented public take center stage.”  So begins an article in Day Spa Magazine that predicts some of the trends and changes on tap for 2018.

As a leader in day spa management and hotel spa management, ISM SPA management company keeps a finger on the pulse of the industry. We don’t just monitor trends – we set them.

Today’s spa treatments are regarded as just one portion of the overall wellness experience; nowhere is that more evident than in ingeniously built, health-oriented resorts.  “The closer it is to its natural state—the more beautiful and healing it becomes,” spa architect Veronica Schreibeis Smith, CEO and founding principal of Vera Iconica Architecture in Jackson, Wyoming told the magazine. “This includes our built environment, and destination spas and resorts are beginning to catch on.”

While others are “catching on,” ISM SPA consultants already have experience in developing unique programming that embodies a spa’s brand attributes while maintaining a connection to the indigenous characteristics of the property’s location. And ISM SPA management company’s service execution is unmatched in the industry.

The ISM SPA approach to programming goes beyond the traditional definition of spa. Working with talented spa architects, the renowned spa management company designs a holistic environment that enhances the wellness experience is unexpected ways. By manipulating the physical and the energetic experience to achieve a desired result, ISM SPA consulting takes programming – and spa management – to a new level.  Guests who visit spas managed by ISM SPA often say they had “the best treatment of their life” or that they have been “forever transformed.”

The experts at Day Spa Magazine point out that spa technology has come a long way, and designers are taking full advantage of the opportunity to harness innovation and inject healing experiences into every aspect of a guest’s spa journey. From sound therapy chairs to sleep pods, there are a multitude of ways to outfit a space for optimal wellness.

When it comes to day spa management, the industry trendsetters at ISM SPA consulting see spa as simply one aspect of wellness. The spa management company adds to the value of its clients’ properties by operating a spa that maximizes revenues and profits while helping build a positive reputation as a service-centered destination leading to repeat visits, increased occupancy and an overall positive brand image.

Now more than ever, a facility must reflect not only societal trends, but its actual place in the world, i.e., its location, the article continues. And when it comes to a wellness destination, that starts with the building itself, Schreibeis Smith said. “Architecture built of local, natural materials mixed with the architect’s ingenuity and respect for the surrounding culture and traditions has the power to heal us, as well as envelop us in new and delightful experiences,” she explains. “The buildings seem to grow out of the landscape and become an inherent part of what allows us to enjoy the natural environment. The experience is complete when combined with local healing traditions, foods and practices that immerse us and ground us in the present moment.”

At ISM SPA management company, it’s our job and our responsibility to keep up with trends such as these.  ISM SPA provides comprehensive spa design services, from expert architectural design by leading spa architects to color selection, lighting design and custom cabinetry design. Our spa consulting expertise also extends to the design of retail space, merchandising and storage.  As your spa consultants, we have spa architect expertise and more that ensures our clients will be on the cutting-edge of trends in the industry.
